“-Kansas, why would you go there?”

Whenever we would mention we were going to Kansas, people would giggle and then ask: “What is there to do in Kansas, why would you go there?” To all you people out there who think Kansas is lame we only want to say one thing: “Hey, you people out there who think Kansas is lame, you are wrong, Kansas rocks!”
We came to Kansas to hang out with our friend Sam Vetter, who went to North Park with us. Sam came and picked us up on the train station 3.30 in the morning, 2 hours before he went to work (I’m telling you, American hospitality is really awesome). When we got back we set our alarm for noon, but it never woke us up. We woke up by ourselves and wondered what time it might be, 9, 10.30. We were far of, it was 2.30 and we had slept for quite a while. We got up to the kitchen and felt like bums, but as usual we got a warm welcome by the family with happy smiles, coffee and coffee cake. When dinner was done Kurtis came. He is another friend from North Park who lives in Salina, a nearby city.
It was around 90 degrees outside and the pool (wohoo, they had a pool!) had the perfect temperature so we went swimming for a while, supervised by Sam’s younger brother Nelson (you cannot have two crazy Swedes alone in your pool). Later Sam came home and we hung out with him and his lawn-mowing friend Jarron, who walked through the gate to the backyard and jumped into the pool with all of his clothes on. Kind of funny first encounter huh?
Around dinnertime we did what all American families have to do on a hot summer day; have a barbeque. It might sound stereotypical, and it is, but we did not suffer at all, on the opposite, we enjoyed the burgers and hot dog, and later the short cake and strawberries.
Sno cone is a concept that we’ve totally missed during our stay here. It is shaved ice (snow) with different flavors that you pour into the snow. If you see a banana colored sno cone on the ground during the winter, do not eat it because it might be something else. We went to the Ice-Shack, where Sam’s sister Johanna and their friend Teel worked and we ordered a snow cone each. An awesome and easy dessert for a hot day, come on Sweden, catch up.
Next to Ice-Shack there was a Wal-Mart with a gigantic parking lot where a few of Sam’s friends and us tossed Frisbee. Since we already were at Wal-Mart we hade to buy something, so we went in and bought some random stuff that we devoured back in Sam’s basement while playing poker. We watched the classic Airplanes II and we all fell asleep in a pile on the floor (it was around 5 AM).
