“-We met online.”

Sam and Charlie Vaughn in Charlie’s mini-ramp   |   “-We met online.” from Olesund

After staying with all of our friends and having everything planned out we wanted some adventure and some unexpected things and we got what we wanted. Friday morning we were picked up outside of Britta’s house. We had expected some old creepy man that would kidnap us, but instead a young surfer named Sam Vaughn picked us up. He studied at UCSC (University of California Santa Cruz) and had gone home to SF to pick up his dog. He was a really sweet dude who surfed a lot and seemed to be pretty pleased with his science studies. After an hour and fifteen minutes we arrived in SC to Sam’s brothers house where we picked up bikes. In the car Sam had already offered us to stay in his house and to show us around campus and downtown. We have said it before and we say it again: American hospitality Rocks!

We biked to a shuttle that took us up to the university campus that was built up in the middle of a Redwood forest on a hill, overlooking SC. When Sam was in class we biked around and explored campus, and took our bikes to the “Bike Coop” to change a tube. When he got out of class he took us to Tree 9, a gigantic fir tree that was at least 80 feet tall. We climbed to the top where you could see over the forest and down to the city and the Ocean. One of the scariest things Erik has ever done.

After the extremely long downhill biking trip we got back in town, where we biked around and explored the city. We had a great burrito at Santa Cruz Taqueria, Isak thought it was the best burrito he’d ever tasted. We returned to his brother’s house where Erik, Sam and Charlie (the brother) skated in their mini ramp on their backyard. Later we biked around a bit more and hung out with some of his friends and went to a park to toss some Frisbee.

Later that night we went to a college party in a house a few miles away from Charlie’s house. Since Sam was drinking Isak offered to drive the car to pick people up. It happened that nine out of our thirteen college Swedes were in SC that day, so Isak drove a few rounds to pick them all up and bring them to the party. The house was crammed with college kids, mostly from UCSC, and the party seemed to be all right but it was stopped very early, around eleven because the cops came, as usual. Neighbors are seldom happy when people have parties, even if it is during the weekends. Some people continued to party in another house but most of them left and us Swedes went to Taco Bell for some night food.
