Uphill, Downhill

Classic Cable car   |   Uphill, Downhill from Olesund

Monday morning we took the MUNI, the public transportation system, down to Market Street, the big commercial street of San Fran. We walked around for a while, looking around in different stores. We came to a catholic church where they had a service. We went in and sat down for a while. On the pews in the back of the church people were sleeping, homeless people, people with no physical homes on this earth. Outside the church and on a large part of Market Street there were bums and homeless people. Alone wrapped up in a blanket, in groups talking and a few in wheel chairs, sleeping. Isak said: “-I have seen homeless and poor people before but it has never struck me before as it did today. I walk around here with my VISA card stuffed with money and buy whatever I want while the people around me barely have money for food.” Something is wrong. Sure, drugs, alcohol and mental diseases play a big role in this, and everyone has a choice of their own, but still…

Around lunchtime we met up with Nina Pedersen (another friend from North Park who lives and in the city) Wilhelm, Alexander and Tommy (our Swedes) for lunch. After that we hopped onto the famous cable cars and rode them up and down the hills hanging out from it like every other annoying tourist, so we were not very original, which is kind of lame, since you never consider yourself being, an annoying tourist. We walked around in the city and Nina showed us around the Fisherman’s Wharf and the harbor area. At pier 39 there was a special tourist attraction: around 100 sea lions. They were all lying around on decks in the water, making obnoxious sounds and snapping at each other.

When we got back to Britta’s house her mom had prepared a burrito dinner, which we ate with joy. After dinner we went to the movie theater and watched Caspian, Prince of Narnia (for Swedes: Suckers, you will not be able to watch it until 2 July!). Erik was almost imploding with excitement; the movie was close to perfection in his eyes.
